About the Project

“Framing Reality” is a photographic and conversational project.

Having access to higher education has empowered us to be inquisitive in questioning the world we live in. Every being should have the opportunity, choice and accessibility to resources and knowledge universities or colleges provide. In our case, we have the privilege to use the photo labs and darkrooms. Learning photographic techniques have been invaluable to us. Furthermore, being immersed in critical thinking through our lectures, demand us to broaden our understanding on a vast list of concepts. This has enabled us to have a stance within different ideologies and to thrive for equality. Being taught by accomplished professors, some who are current artists, allows for strength to pursue our trade. “Framing Reality” will reveal to the government that our education is fundamental for growth. Specifically, for our development and transformation against all types of discrimination. We feel that we could tackle any situation around us but we have prioritized learning and engaging within the city we now live in, something that Emily Carr has permitted and encouraged.

Artist Profiles

Mimi and Nani Gonzalez are sisters from Venezuela. They grew up between Spain and England and recently moved to Vancouver to attend Emily Carr. They both love travelling and taking photos, but never realized they could make something out of it. Nani is currently a curator for the TEDxECUAD. Mimi enjoys painting, photography and film. They are both involved in voicing their concerns to what is happening in the world around them. Being from Venezuela is our primary pride, unfortunately most people from our country do not get the opportunities we have had. Through our art practice we like informing others of our opinions and influence the public to be compassionate and to thrive for equality.

Nani’s Education Story

I was a straight A’s student during my A-levels in London, I had a lot of pressure from my parents to study and get into the best universities. I spent the last months of my high school studying as I was required to get A+, A, A, to get into my top choice university. In the later months of summer, I find out I got in and in September I embarked to study at Kings College London. I had my student loan set up, and I stayed at home with my mum because she was very strict on me moving out.

I never once questioned if I was ready. University was not even what I wanted. All those months of studying, had made me go through so much stress that I ended up developing migraines and during my exams I suffered from chest infections. By the end, I was so frail, not just physically but emotionally too. I was so immature I couldn’t even tell there was a problem.

I struggled with depression for the next five years. I obviously never even finished my first year at Kings and even if I applied year after year to other degrees at other universities, I never made it passed the first month.

Travelling and moving to other countries during this time, getting to know the world, understanding what goes around me, made me want to live again. I began to uncover my Self. Digging deeper inside to understand and to surrender to who I am. After five years I started my first day at Emily Carr with a passion for photojournalism. To share with the world what it has taught me. And every day I learn more, about society, culture, art, history and most importantly about Me.

Dear Premier…

We are in debt. As society is structured, we will always be in debt. We think it is important to give people the opportunity to study, to learn why the land we inhabit is the way it is, and to discover more about it. Without the support of the world around me, we wouldn’t be here today. So let’s keep making the world a better place by allowing people to make the best of themselves. To have fearless people contribute to our society. To end prejudice and unfairness.
